Answer. Insect repellents work by discouraging insects from biting, from landing on, or even coming close to the surface where it is applied. Generally they will repel insects at short distances, so even though you may see them nearby, more than likely they will not land on you if you are protected.
Insect repellents work on the insect's olfactory senses in the following two ways:
By masking the human scent and releasing an odor unappealing to the insect or
The ingredients in the repellent cause the insect's sensors to malfunction, thus confusing them so they don't land and bite.
Answer. Insects are an important part of the eco-system and we must co-exist. However we also need to protect ourselves from unwarranted exposure to diseases spread by an insect bite for example, West Nile Virus from mosquitoes, Lyme disease from ticks or an allergic reaction to an insects bite.
You should also take other preventative when venturing into insect infested environs for example, wearing long sleeves and pants with socks and in extreme case a mosquito net hat may be advisable.
Safety first, whether you're going for a walk in your backyard or on the AT.
Answer. The short answer is no, however 45ºN 68ºW Natural Insect Repellent has been proven effective against most of the commonly found insects including flies, ticks, gnats, no-see-ums, flees as well as mosquitoes. It has long been recognized and documented that insects are the most diverse group of organisms, meaning that the numbers of species of insects are more than any other group. In the world, some 900 thousand different kinds of living insects are known. This representation approximates 80 percent of the world's species. The true figure of living species of insects can only be estimated from present and past studies. Most authorities agree that there are more insect species that have not been described (named by science) than there are insect species that have been previously named. Conservative estimates suggest that this figure is 2 million, but estimates extend to 30 million. (Source: Smithsonian Institute).
Answer. It means that all active and inactive ingredients are of botanical origin and are derived from natural sources. Answer. 45ºN 68ºW line of natural products is developed out of our passion of the outdoors and environmental conservation. The concept for developing a line of personal protection products for the outdoor enthusiast was conceived while hiking on the Appalachian Trail in the Harriman Park System a few years ago.
Our brand "45ºN 68ºWTM" is a tribute to Katahdin, the Appalachian Trail and the Hudson Valley Region.
45ºN 68ºWTM signifies the coordinates of the Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail (45°54′15.68″N 68°55′16.59″ W/ 45.9043556°N 68.921275°W) located on Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine. Katahdin named so by the Penobscot Indians literally means "The Greatest Mountain". It has inspired hikes, climbs, painting, a piano sonata and our line of personal protection products.
The Appalachian Trail (aka AT) is a continuous marked footpath that goes from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, a distance of about approx. 2181 miles (the distance changes year to year as part of the trail may need to be relocated due to various reasons). The origins of the Trail are attributed to Benton Mackaye, who envisioned and campaigned for the trail in the 1920s, recognized that "the ability to cope with nature directly—unshielded by the weakening wall of civilization—is one of the admitted needs of modern times." More than 70 years later, the Appalachian Trail pulls the imagination of millions stuck in the daily grind of the crowded eastern seaboard—and elsewhere. The trail beckons for us to get away. Spend a day, or a week, or a season on the trail.
There are few areas of this country that have the same kind of historical significance as the Hudson Valley. This was one of the first areas that were colonized during the exploration of the new world. This was also a very important area in this nation's struggle for freedom in its formative years. Over the years this is an area that has seen the best of society and some difficult times as well. The Hudson Valley is a pristine and beautiful area with rolling hills and the scenic Hudson River that at one time earned the nickname of "America's Rhine." On October 7, 1923, the first section of the Appalachian Trail, from Bear Mountain west through Harriman State Park to Arden, New York was opened.

Answer. As with all botanicals, be mindful of allergic reactions. Do a "sniff" and skin test at home before a full body application. If you or your child develops a rash or any other adverse reaction from an insect repellent, stop using the repellent, wash the repellent off with mild soap and water, and call a local poison control center for further guidance. If you go to a doctor because of the repellent, take the repellent with you to show the doctor. After returning indoors, always wash treated skin with soap and water or bathe. This is particularly important when repellents are used repeatedly in a day or on consecutive days.
